Spiritually Minded
What does it mean to be “spiritually minded?” Are there people today who have reached this state of mind?
It would seem that the world has been overrun with people who are “out of their mind.”
They seem to be out of control and definitely do not have the mind of Yahushua. I am
talking about much more than the group churchianity calls “sinners.” In fact, there
are more people claiming to be christians today that there are those who admit to be
sinners. The Scriptures tell us that sin is breaking Yahweh’s laws. How many
churches today are keeping all 10 of Yahweh’s commandments? Could it be that these
christians not only do NOT have the mind of Yahushua, they have no clue what this
concept really means.
Let’s look at what Shaul (Paul) says about the mind of Yahushua.
Philippians
2:1 If there is therefore any exhortation in Messiah, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any tender mercies and compassion,
2:2 make my joy full, by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind;
2:3 doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself;
2:4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.
2:5 Have this in your mind, which was also in Messiah Yahushua,
2:6 who, existing in the form of Yahweh, didn't consider equality with Yahweh a thing to be grasped,
2:7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.
2:8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the stake.
Shaul (Paul) makes it pretty clear just how the mind of Yahushua worked. He provides
a check list of things that made Yahushua’s mind different than the carnal mind of
others.
1. Yahushua had a mind of love.
The Greek word used in verse 2 is agape, Strong’s G26. It can be stated as affection,
benevolence, charity or dear love.
We see a mind of hate in the world today. I am reminded of the joke about the driver
who gets pulled over by a police officer, after they had acted improperly towards
another driver. The officer states that he thought the car was stolen, because there was
a WWJD? bumper sticker and a fish emblem on the car and the driver was acting
like the devil.
Violence, hate, jealousy, envy and strife fill the minds of people today. We have soaked
up so much junk from TV, movies, music and other worldly sources that the love of
Yahushua has all but grown extinct.
Mattithyahu (Matthew) 24:12 says because iniquity abounds the love of many has
waxed cold or chilled. Iniquity is translated as illegality or transgression of the law.
DID YOU CATCH THAT? People have lost their mind of love because they are NOT
keeping Yahweh’s law. When we turn back to His laws and clean up our hearts, minds
and lives, we will discover a new mind that is filled with affection and charity for our
fellow man.
Luke 11:42 states that the Pharisee’s had made great efforts to tithe but had moved
away from the Divine Law of Yahweh and His love. They should have kept His law, then
they would have had His love and could have tithed with the “right mind.”
See: Yohanan (John) 15:10, Romans 12:9, Romans 13:10, Philippians 1:19
This is not a sweet pill to swallow. If we are not keeping His law, we cannot have His
love.
I Yohanan (John) 4:6-11
We are of Yahweh. He who knows Yahweh listens to us. He who is not of Yahweh doesn't listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of Yahweh; and everyone who loves is born of Yahweh, and knows Yahweh.
He who doesn't love doesn't know Yahweh, for Yahweh is love.
By this Yahweh’s love was revealed in us, that Yahweh has sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.
In this is love, not that we loved Yahweh, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Beloved, if Yahweh loved us in this way, we also ought to love one another.
Now we have several issues presented here that we must consider:
A. We are of Yahweh. When we receive His Set Apart Spirit we become one with Him.
B. Those who are not of Yahweh do not listen to us. This allows us to know whether
one is in the Truth or not. (If someone refuses to listen to the message we bring,
they DO NOT have the Set Apart Spirit. Sorry it’s His Word not mine)
C. We should love one another, for with Yahweh comes love. If you have Yahweh,
then you should be displaying love.
D. Yahweh is love. No Yahweh, no love. Know Yahweh, know love. We cannot
have or display love without Yahweh. There are allot of things the world mistakes for
love. Lust, affection, admiration etc. However, real love can only be a love that is
Yahweh based.
E. Those who show no love do not have Yahweh.
F. Yahweh showed us perfect love, by sending His Son, the Word/Torah incarnate that
we could live through Him/Yahushua.
G. This is love. Not that we loved Yahweh, but that He loved us and sent an
intermediator for our sins. This established a relationship between us and Yahweh.
H. Now we know how to love one another based upon this relationship.
If Yahushua was the Word/Torah (Yohanan 1:14), and had a mind of love, then we
should see how to love by the Ten Commandments/Words.
The Hebrew word for commandments is mitzvoth. The actual translation for Ten
Commandments would be eseret haDabarot or Ten Words. Yahweh delivered them
to Mosheh on two stone tablets that He had personally written on. Five different
Words/Commands on each tablet. These Ten Words are the foundation or basis for
the Torah. They reflect every doctrine and principle of Yahweh’s will.
Let us look at this foundation or manual to see if it shows us how to love. If Yahushua
was the Torah made flesh, and Yahushua had a mind of love, then we should see love
clearly displayed in the Ten Words.
And Elohim spake all these words, saying, I am YAHWEH thy Elohim, which brought
thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
They shall have no other els before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any
graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the
earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down
thyself to them, nor serve them: for I YAHWEH thy Elohim am a jealous Elohim,
visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth
generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them
that love me, and keep my Words.
Thou shalt not take the name of YAHWEH thy Elohim in vain; for YAHWEH will not
hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day to keep it Set Apart. Six days shalt thou labor, and
do all thy work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of YAHWEH thy Elohim: in it
thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant,
nor the maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For
in six days YAWEH made heaven and earth, the sea and all that in them is, and
rested the seventh day: wherefore YAHWEH blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed
it.
Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which
YAHWEH thy Elohim giveth thee.
Thou shalt not commit murder.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s
wife, nor his manservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy
neighbor’s.
Within these 10 Commands/Words are the two pillars or foundations that love
rest upon. Two tablets containing 5 sets of precepts on each. The first five
contain the sacred name of Yahweh within each one, and outline our love and
relationship with Him. The second five outline our love and relationship with
our fellow man. These do not contain the name of Yahweh.
Yahushua clearly explained this in Mark 12: 29-31
Yahushua answered, "The greatest is, 'Hear, Yisra'el, Yahweh our Elohim, Yahweh is one:
you shall love the Yahweh your Elohim with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first mitzvah.
The second is like this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other mitzvah greater than these."
Yahushua breaks it down clearly. The scribes wanted to know which of the commands
were the greatest, He shows that there is no one greatest. The first five are really one,
and the second five are one. Both tablets are of equal importance since together they
hold up the greatest attribute of all believers....love.
See Romans 13:8-10, James 2:8-26
2. Yahushua had a mind of unity with Yahweh.
The Greek words used here are soom psoo khos and fron eh o, Strong's numbers G4861
and G5426. They mean respectively; similar in sentiment or like-minded and one
affection thinking the same thing. Harmonious in soul, hearts beating together like
clocks that are synchronized.
If we are to have the mind of Yahushua, we must be in synch with Yahweh. This means
we do not allow thoughts that are contrary to the Word of Yahweh to take root. We
must pray “lead me not into temptation, but deliver me from evil.” Evil thoughts, evil
actions, evil words and evil deeds.
If Yahushua is our salvation, (That’s the very definition of His beautiful Name) then
when we pray for the helmet of salvation, we are in fact praying for the mind of
Yahushua. A mind that is in perfect harmony with Yahweh, like dancers in a troupe
moving together in perfect harmony. Following a score that dictates our movements,
not seeking our own way, but desiring to be in harmony with our Creator.
Romans 8: 1-10
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Messiah Yahushua, who don't walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
For the law of the Spirit of life in Messiah Yahushua made me free from the law of sin and of death.
For what the law couldn't do, in that it was weak through the flesh, Yahweh did, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh;
that the ordinance of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and shalom;
because the mind of the flesh is hostile towards Yahweh; for it is not subject to Yahweh's law, neither indeed can it be.
Those who are in the flesh can't please Yahweh.
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if it is so that the Spirit of Yahweh dwells in you. But if any man doesn't have the Spirit of Messiah, he is not his.
If Messiah is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is alive because of righteousness.
We are no longer found deserving of judgment when we are in Yahushua, because we
no longer walk in the flesh or carnal mind, but are now spiritually minded. For the law,
or Torah Bread of Life for the mind of Yahweh, is life in Yahushua Messiah setting us
free from sin and death. In our carnality, the law is weak and unable to save us, but
through Yahushua Messiah who came in the form of the flesh, condemned carnality and
lawlessness. The righteousness of the Torah might be accomplished in us, who
walk not after carnality, but with a spiritual mind.
For they that are after the manner of carnality, think with a carnal mind;
but they that follow the Spirit are Spiritually minded. For to have a
carnal mind is death; but to be Spiritually minded is life and shalom
(completeness). For a carnal mind is hostile towards Yahweh, and is not subject
or submitted to the Law of Yahweh and cannot ever be. So they that are carnally
minded cannot please Yahweh. But if we are full of His Set Apart Spirit, we are
not carnally minded. We have to realize that our carnal nature is dead. Now our
hearts have been circumcised, and the carnal nature has been cut off.
The fruit of the Spirit has began to grow in our hearts/minds. Yahweh made it
abundantly clear that there are attributes or fruit that the Spiritual mind must
develop.
Galatians 5:22,23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, shalom, patience, kindness, goodness, faith,
gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Ephesians 5:8-10
For you were once darkness, but are now light in Yahweh. Walk as children of light,
for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth,
proving what is well pleasing to Yahweh.
Love
We looked at love already and know that a mind of love is one that understands
the relationship we have with Yahweh and our fellow man. Treating Yahweh the
way He should be treated, and treating our neighbors the way they should be treated.
Joy
This word is chara Strong's number G5463. It means a calm cheerfulness, delight or
gladness. It is indicated that this joy comes from the Set Apart Spirit in I Thessalonians
1:16, Romans 14:17, Romans 15:13.
Shalom
I - rah - nay Strong's number G1515. It means prosperity, quietness and completeness.
Yohanan 14:26,27
But the Counselor, the Set Apart Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.
Shalom I leave with you. My shalom I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don't let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.
There is a completeness in Yahweh it is placed in our hearts by the Set Apart Spirit.
We have need of nothing, if we have Him. Therefore, we are complete and
prosperous because of Him. See Romans 5:1, Romans 14:7, Romans 15:13,
Ephesians 6:15.
Patience
This word is long-suffering in the KJV. However it is actually mak-roth-oo-mee'-ah
Strong's number G3115. It means forbearance, fortitude or patience. Colossians 3:12
tells us to put on (like putting on a garment) patience. We must take it up and wear
it ourselves. We make the decision to put on patience. We make the decision to be
impatient. Being an impatient person, I do not like this fact, but it’s still the truth. If
I am going to have a Spiritual Mind, I must put on patience.
Kindness
Khray-stot'-ace Strongs number G5544. This is defined as moral excellence, gentleness.
Colossians 3:12-17
Put on therefore, as Yahweh's chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance;
bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Messiah forgave you, so you also do.
Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.
And let the shalom of Yahweh rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.
Let the word of Messiah dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to Yahweh.
Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Yahushua Messiah, giving thanks to Yahweh the Father, through him.
There is an attitude that we must be prevalent in having the mind of Yahushua. It
is a calmness, gentleness, meekness that the world does not know. We allow the Word
of Yahushua (Torah) dwell in us. We are always teaching and admonishing one
another. Singing with joyful hearts. This is not the combative militant attitude that
we see in so many so called believers today.
Goodness
The word used here is almost identical to kindness. It is ag-ath-o-soo'-nay Strongs
number G19. Virtue or beneficence. The difference here is that unlike kindness,
goodness comes from Yahweh. There is nothing good about us. We can
be kind and gentle, but without Yahweh we cannot be good. We must allow Him to be
good in us.
Faith
Strongs number G4102 this is pis'-tis. It means persuasion, credence or moral
conviction. This is much more than the world has made it today. Everyone has faith
now days. But true faith is a shield, it protects us and is the first thing our enemy sees.
When we approach the enemy our faith is between us and the attack. It is a deep
rooted belief that cannot be shaken.
Gentleness
Meekness in the KJV. This is prah-ot'-ace Strongs number G4236. Humility is another
meaning. We are to be a humble people. Galatians 6:1 paints a picture of humble
believers that remember where Yahweh brought them from when considering others.
See Ephesians 4:2, I Timothy 6:11, II Timothy 2:25.
Self control
This is eng-krat'-i-ah Strongs number G1466. It means temperance or continence.
I Corinthians 9:24-27
Don't you know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run like that, that you may win.
Every man who strives in the games exercises self-control in all things. Now they do it to receive a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible.
I therefore run like that, as not uncertainly. I fight like that, as not beating the air,
but I beat my body and bring it into submission, lest by any means, after I have preached to others, I myself should be rejected.
This is a display of a conditioned athlete. One who is regimented in their workout, diet
and training. We must display this type of mindset with the things of Yahweh. Not
having to be told to pray or study. Doing it on our own, like an Olympic athlete.
Feeling the drive inside to be our best for Him. Rising in the morning and falling to our
knees in prayer. Seeking His face throughout the day. Turning off the television, stereo
or computer and turning on to His Word. Pushing ourselves harder and harder,
knowing that we are becoming stronger in Him as we grow weaker to our flesh.
These things make up the concept of being in one mind with Yahweh. This is what
Yahushua did, and this is what we must do to be like Him.
3. Yahushua did nothing through strife or vainglory, but in lowliness of mind.
We are not to do things with a contentious or conceited attitude. But do all things in humility and modesty.
This is a confusing issue. Maybe it doesn’t seem confusing to you now but consider this:
II Corinthians 6:15-18
What agreement has Messiah with Beliya`al? Or what portion has a believer with an unbeliever?
What agreement has a temple of Yahweh with idols? For you are a temple of the living Elohim. Even as Yahweh said, "I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their Elohim, and they will be my people."
Therefore, "'Come out from among them, and be separate,' says Yahweh. 'Touch no unclean thing. I will receive you.
I will be to you a Father. You will be to me sons and daughters,' says Yahweh Almighty."
So here we see that we are to come out, escape, get out from among, between or in
the midst of them and be separate, severed or with boundaries. Not even
touching the unclean. How do we manage to do this all the while doing nothing
with an attitude of contention or conceit. It seems so much that we do is to
establish a distinction from the world, but are we causing strife and vainglory?
If so we are doing it wrong. This is where we must have the wisdom of Yahweh.
Here is the answer right from Yahushua.
Mattithyahu 10:16
"Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
He is sending us out as sheep (something that walks forward) in the midst
of wolves (something that sneaks around and attacks your weakness from
behind.) Sheep are completely incapable of defending themselves and NEVER
consider attacking. The sheep just follow the shepherd and keep moving forward.
We sheep have a defense, it is the shepherd. We are in the midst of the wolves,
which also translates to white haired. So from a distance the sheep do not stand
out. It is only the keen eye of the shepherd that can see the wolves sneaking
in amongst the sheep. He sees both sheep and wolves, we are just looking at Him,
not even looking at the wolves.
Wise, thoughtful, discreet and cautious as serpents but harmless, innocent or
simple as doves. One without the other is dangerous. We must not be duped or
tricked by the wolves but still remain innocent and gentle as doves. Not regarding
ourselves or the things we possess, but regarding others in humility.
The mind of a servant. One who doesn’t try to put themselves over and above
anyone. Not by appearance, action or attitude. Always keeping in mind who we
are, who we serve/follow and who they are and who they serve/follow.
Let nothing we do be done to bring attention or glory to ourselves. But let us have
the mind that Yahushua had, a servant’s mind. Daily eating from Yahweh’s table,
manna from on high and living water from the well that never runs dry. Putting
on the armor of Yahweh, and going out to fight against principalities, rulers in
high places.
Overview
We now have a clear picture of what the Spiritual Mind is composed.
1. A mind of love.
A. Daily fueled by the Word of Yahweh. Allowing His Torah to be a light into
our paths and a lamp into our feet.
B. Showing the Torah based love to Yahweh and our fellow man. Not
forgetting that Yahweh and His Torah are our love foundation.
2. Having one mind with Yahweh.
A. Becoming as Yahushua was, one with Yahweh and His will. For in Him we
live, move and have our being.
B. Casting out all evil thoughts and imaginations. Putting on the helmet of
salvation (Yahushua) and letting the Fruit of the Spirit grow within
our minds.
I. Love, joy, shalom, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness,
and self-control. This complete package of fruit make us the proper
acting examples that Yahweh wants us to become.
3. Doing nothing with a haughty, separatist mentality but having a servants
heart.
A. Becoming sheep, not wolves or wolves in sheep clothing. Being separate,
but not by attitude but by our lives. Going forward, keeping our eyes
on the shepherd at all times. Allowing Yahweh to keep us separate.
B. Having a humble and contrite spirit. Ready to help others, and be used
by Yahweh in whatever capacity He needs us.
C. Being wise, contemplative and discerning while being unoffending,
spotless and unmistakable at the same time. This can only be done with
the help of Yahweh.
May Father Yahweh give us the strength we need to become what He needs
in these last days.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of Yahweh.
